IVF: What to Expect, From First Consultation to Positive Test

A complete, compassionate guide to IVF treatment – written by Dr. Harshlata Laddha, who has helped thousands of families grow through personalised IVF care.

A compassionate approach to reproductive health

Dr. Harshlata Laddha is a fertility specialist who still remembers the name of every patient who walked through her door hoping to become a parent. With an MBBS, DGO, and Fellowship in Reproductive Medicine (FRM), she brings both deep expertise and genuine compassion to every consultation.

In 2011, she co-founded Samarth IVF with a simple belief: that every family deserves a chance at parenthood. Over two decades, she has guided more than 50,000 patients through some of the most vulnerable and hopeful moments of their lives.

From young couples just beginning their journey to women in their 40s and 50s who have been told it is too late, Dr. Harshlata has built a reputation for saying yes when others have said no.

Who Needs IVF?

IVF is not the first step for everyone — but for many couples and individuals, it represents the best path to parenthood. You may be advised to consider IVF if you have:

  • Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes
  • Low sperm count or poor motility
  • Unexplained infertility
  • Endometriosis affecting fertility
  • Age-related infertility, particularly over 35
  • Previously failed IUI or other treatment
The IVF Journey

Step-by-Step IVF Process

Ovarian Stimulation
Egg Retrieval
Fertilisation
Embryo Culture
Embryo Transfer
Pregnancy Test
Step 1

Ovarian Stimulation

Over 10–14 days, you will take hormone injections to encourage your ovaries to produce multiple mature eggs. You will visit the clinic 3–5 times during this phase for ultrasound monitoring and blood tests.

Step 2

Egg Retrieval

When your eggs are ready, a minor procedure is performed under short-acting anaesthesia. Using ultrasound guidance, eggs are collected through the vaginal wall in 15–20 minutes.

Step 3

Fertilisation

The collected eggs are placed with prepared sperm in the embryology laboratory, or fertilised directly via ICSI when male factor infertility is present.

Step 4

Embryo Culture

The embryos are kept in a controlled incubator for 3–5 days, monitored daily by our embryologist as they develop toward the blastocyst stage.

Step 5

Embryo Transfer

The selected embryo is transferred into the uterus through a thin catheter — a painless procedure taking only a few minutes, no anaesthesia required.

Step 6

Pregnancy Test

Two weeks after transfer, a blood test (beta-hCG) confirms whether pregnancy has been achieved.

How Dr. Harshlata Approaches IVF

Dr. Harshlata believes that successful IVF treatment is about more than laboratory technique — it is about understanding the person in front of her. Her approach combines clinical excellence with emotional intelligence.

She designs personalised stimulation protocols based on your age, ovarian reserve, and medical history. She is particularly known for treating women in their late 30s, 40s, and even early 50s — patients often told elsewhere their chances are too low.

She does not recommend unnecessary procedures, does not create false hope, and ensures every patient understands both the possibilities and realistic expectations of their treatment.

Success Rates

IVF success depends on age, egg and sperm quality, embryo quality, and the underlying cause of infertility.

Common IVF FAQs

Is IVF painful?

Most patients find IVF far less uncomfortable than anticipated. Egg retrieval is performed under anaesthesia, and the embryo transfer is completely painless.

Some patients achieve pregnancy after one cycle; others need two or three, depending on age and individual response. Dr. Harshlata will discuss your prognosis directly.

In India, IVF can be performed up to age 50 under ICMR guidelines. Dr. Harshlata has particular expertise treating women in their 40s and early 50s.

IVF babies are generally as healthy as naturally conceived babies, with rigorous screening protocols at Samarth IVF giving every pregnancy the best start.
